Google to anonymize IPs after 9 months

Google announced a new web server log retention policy yesterday on its official blog. As per the new policy, the current web search logs retention period will come down from current 18 months - to only 9 months. Google blog post explains how the web server logs are important for analyzing their user’s search behavior and use the intelligence gained for improving search result quality, improve security, fight fraud and reduce spam.
This move from the search giant comes after EU’s data protection and privacy regulators asked justifications for retaining user’s IP and search data for 24 months(then) and the recent spat they had with Viacom over copyrighted videos posted on hugely popular YouTube video sharing service.
