Netflix announced the public availability of its API service from 1st October. Netflix is a U.S. based movie and video content subscription service which rents DVDs of movies and TV episodes for a small monthly subscription fee.
In an official blogpost announcing the Netflix api, Adam said:
Why are we doing this? Because we have limited resources and we can only work on so many items at once. We hope that by opening up our APIs we will enable the creative desires of other developers to make a variety of wonderful applications.
Netflix has a collection of more than 100,000 movies and TV titles on DVD format, and the API will allow developers access to the entire collection of titles and netflix member’s subscription data. Netflix allows developers to offer services build around the API for free, as a commercial service supported by fees, supported by advertisements or as a commercial iPhone app sold from Appstore.
The API itself is very rich, allowing developers access to entire catalog and user info over REST, SOAP, XMLRPC interfaces. API security is implemented with the OAuth api authenticaion standard and the API itself is hosted by experts at Mashery.
There are still no applications around utilizing the power of their API, but it will be interesting to see what the independent developers come up with.
