Sourceforge now offers hosted applications
Posted on | October 14, 2008 |
Sourceforge.net, the old stalwart offering project management, bugzilla, version control, mailing list and project web space has added another service in its list. The new service will enable sourceforge developers to select a hosted app, and run it on Sourceforge infrastructure. SF sysadmins take care of the rest.
Currently the list of available apps is relatively small, but the menu will most likely grow as the relatively new service matures. The popular apps available for hosting are:
- MediaWiki - Unarguably, the most widely used and feature rich wiki app.
- phpBB - Very popular forums application.
- LimeSurvey - A popular survey management application.
Like all the other addon services, users need to opt-in to use hosted applications, which they can do by navigating to Hosted Apps link from the Admin area of their project navigation menu. The key advantages of using hosted apps are:
- No need to deal with installation and configuration of apps.
- Apps are hosted on separate web servers and use dedicated database servers. These machines are separate from the normal project servers.
- Sourceforge sysadmins take care of managing servers, upgrades, security patches, database upkeep, backups etc.
- Centralized sourceforge authentication.
And many more features and future todos are listed at sourceforge forums by the staff.
