Flagfox - Display country where the website is hosted at
Posted on | October 3, 2008 |
Flagfox is a nice little utility for firefox that instantly displays the country where the website you are viewing is located. Flagfox sits in the browser’s address bar or status bar and silently queries its GeoIP database and displays a small flag of the country where host is located. On clicking the icon it performs a complete lookup on the IP of server.
Flagfox can be downloaded from its Mozilla addons page. Its available for firefox version 2.0 upwards.

Flagfox serves a nice tool to alert you against phishing and website spoofing attacks. You can atleast get cautious when you one fine day you see your regular german bank’s website is being hosted from china or nigeria or some other totally unrelated country.
On the same note, it also serves to reassure you when you and the website you are browsing are in same country, since generally connectivity within same country is very fast due to ISPs local peering arrangements.
