OpenOffice 3 Free Office Suite released and available for download
Posted on | October 14, 2008 |
October 2008 is a month of several major Free & OpenSource Software project releases. Today the OpenOffice.org project announced release of version 3 of its popular free office suite. With its third major version bump, OpenOffice.org has come a lot closer to become a strong alternative to Microsoft’s Office products.
OpenOffice.org comes with six well known office productivity applications, has support for several popular document formats, and still comes to you totally free of cost, making it a must have application for every desktop installation.
At the time of this writing, due to the huge interest and phenominal traffic to the OpenOffice.org website, its homepage has been replaced with a static web page, with links to local download mirrors.
Apologies - our website is struggling to cope with the unprecedented demand for the new release 3.0 of OpenOffice.org. The technical teams are trying to come up with a solution. Thank you for your patience.
The new OpenOffice suite comes a range of applications. Apart from OpenOffice.org Writer word processor, OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheet app, OpenOffice.org Impress presentation program, the complete suite also contains OpenOffice.org Base database program, OpenOffice.org Math equation editor and a graphics program named OpenOffice.org Draw.
Since Sun Microsystems is a big proponent of OpenDocument Format, support for latest ODF 1.2 format is present apart from support for documents created using latest Microsoft Office 2007 suite. However the .docx file format used by Microsoft Office 2007 is unimplemented at the moment.
OpenOffice.org has undoubetdly improved a lot in terms of speed since its pre/1.x days, but it still doesnt come close to Microsoft’s Office suite. But its still not a problem by me since its Free, and its the only option for Linux users. Yes, yes, i know KOffice is an option too, and its 2.0 release is just around the corner.
OpenOffice.org 3 is available for all supported architectures like Windows, Linux, Mac Intel/PPC and Solaris x86/SPARC and can be downloaded from its official download page.
